Serve your neighbour...
So this is my third week in Japan. Things are starting to settle . Step by step...
Most of the tedious administrative paper work and the various registrations are done.
I'm getting used to the new lab little by little. People have been very nice and helpful to me.
Our flat is now close to fully furnished and we enjoy it a lot, especially since we got an internet connection and cable TV. It is quite pleasant to see French or English or Italian films as an alternative to Japanese television (not a big fan yet :-).
Last Thursday we had my welcome party with the lab. We went to eat in one of those typical Japanese bars where you can order all kinds of small dishes to accompany your drinks. One Japanese custom that is often followed in this kind of occasion is that you shouldn't fill your own glass, but instead you are responsible for filling the glasses of people sitting next to you. That means that you have to pay attention to the level of alcohol in your neighbour's glasses, and offer to refill when they are getting too low. This somehow sends a signal saying that your glass is also getting dangerously empty, and you see where this is going... Keeps the party lively.
So, serve your neighbour and you glass will always (OK, most of the times) be full.
